How Much Tallow Balm Should You Actually Use?

By Kelly Marsch · · 3 min read

Start small. A big scoop just makes it easier to overdo it. You can always add a little more.

How to start

Rugged Refinement has a whipped texture, but it’s still a rich balm. If you’re used to spreading a generous amount of lotion, start with less balm than you’d normally take.

  1. Wash and dry your hands. Keep dirt and water out of the jar.
  2. Take a small amount. Apply it to clean, dry skin and spread it gently over one area.
  3. Check before adding more. If that area feels comfortably covered, leave it there. If it doesn’t cover the area, add a little more.

You don’t need to keep rubbing until a heavy layer disappears. Start lighter and you’ll have less to work in.

Face, hands and body need different amounts

For your face, go especially small. It’s a smaller area, and you’ll notice a heavy finish quickly. Spread a thin layer and see how it feels before using more.

For your hands, focus on the dry areas. Work a little over them rather than automatically covering both hands with a thick layer. Check that your grip is secure before returning to tools or driving.

For your body, work in sections. A larger area will need more overall, but you can build that up a little at a time. Don’t use the amount you’d use on your arms as your starting point for your face.

There’s no exact scoop size that will suit everyone. The area you’re covering and how you like the balm to feel both matter.

If it feels greasy, use less next time

Stop adding product once it feels heavy. Next time, take a smaller amount and spread it over one area before deciding whether you need more.

You’re just finding a comfortable amount; you don’t need to measure it or follow a complicated schedule.

A shiny coating isn’t something you need to aim for. If the finish isn’t for you, there’s no reason to force it. And if a product causes irritation, stop using it.

Fit it around washing up

After washing or showering is an easy time to remember. Pat your skin dry, apply a little and get on with your day. Reapply when needed.

If you work outside, keep sun protection separate. Balm doesn’t replace sunscreen. Our simple skincare routine for outdoor work explains how washing, moisture and sun protection fit together.

Look after the jar

Use clean, dry hands or a clean applicator, then put the lid back on. Store the balm somewhere cool and dry, away from strong heat and direct sunlight. Avoid leaving it in a hot vehicle.

That’s how I’d use Rugged Refinement too: start small, use it where you need it, and add more only if you want it.
